Story of Adam’s Song -Blink182

 Adam’s Song adalah single ke-3 blink-182 di album Enema of the State (EOTS) (1999). Single ‘Adam’s Song’ dirilis pada 5 September 2000 dan sempat menduduki posisi 2 chart ‘US Modern Rock Tracks’. Adam’s Song adalah satu-satunya lagu bertempo lambat dan berlirik serius/dark di album EOTS. Menjadikannya lagu paling ‘berbeda’ di album itu dan sekaligus salah satu yang paling kontroversial. Banyak yang menganggap Adam’s Song adalah lagu tentang bunuh diri/suicide karena liriknya yang bernuansa depresi. Salah satu rumornya adl bahwa Mark menulisnya setelah mendapat surat dari seorang anak bernama Adam yg ingin mengakhiri hidupnya. Tapi rumor tsb. tidak dapat dibuktikan sampai sekarang karena Mark sendiri tidak memberikan konfirmasi atas rumor itu.

Hingga akhirnya pada 4 Mei 2000, ada sebuah tragedi yang juga menyeret lagu Adam’s Song ini. Greg Barnes, seorang siswa Columbine High School mengakhiri hidupnya sambil menyetel lagu #AdamsSong berkali-kali di CD player nya. Diduga Barnes mengalami depresi karena dia menyaksikan teman baiknya terbunuh karena tertembak. Setelah kasus Greg Barnes tadi, akhirnya Mark mengklarifikasi makna sebenarnya dari lagu Adam’s Song ini. Mark berkata: Jika diteliti lebih lanjut, lagu ini sebenarnya adalah lagu anti-suicide.

“Lagu ini adalah tentang diri Saya yang kesepian saat tur sebelum menemukan wanita yang Saya cintai. Memang lagu ini juga tentang depresi, namun seburuk-buruknya keadaan, pasti ada hal yang lebih baik di sisi lainnya.Pasti selalu ada harapan, dan Kamu bisa mengandalkan sahabatmu yang selalu ada untukmu dan sebagainya.” -Mark Hoppus

Selain itu Mark juga turut berbelasungkawa kepada keluarga Greg atas apa yang telah terjadi.

Ada beberapa fakta menarik tentang lagu Adam’s Song, diantaranya:

• Lirik “I traced the cord back to the wall, no wonder it was never plugged in at all” diambil dari pengalaman Tom. Sewaktu Tom berlatih di garasi, amplifier-nya tergenang air. Tapi beruntung kabel amplifier tersebut tdk terhubung dgn listrik.
• Di bagian “I took my time, I hurried up, the choice was mine, I didn’t think enough” seperti jawaban dr lagu ‘Come As You Are’. Di bagian “I took my time, I hurried up, the choice was mine, I didn’t think enough” seperti jawaban dr lagu ‘Come As You Are’.
• Terakhir, Adam’s Song tidak lagi dimainkan live oleh blink-182 sejak tahun 2009. Di tahun itu, sahabat mereka, Adam Goldstein (DJ AM) meninggal dunia dan mereka memutuskan untuk tidak memainkannya lagi. Dan sekitar 3 bulan lalu, Mark mengatakan bahwa blink-182 ‘mempensiunkan’ lagu Adam’s Song permanen dari setlist live mereka.
